BY OBED OLUKU….

The leadership of the Niger Delta Students Union Government, NIDSUG, has on Thursday the 30th of April, 2020. Passed a communique/vote of confidence on the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, His Excellency, Obong Godswill Obot Akpabio.

The students made their decision known, via a press statement jointly signed by the National President, Comrade Joey Ekardi Jr. and other leaders of the body. Of which a copy was sent to Coastal Times.

The Students in the press statement, made known the reasons for them to come out, to make their perspective towards the Honourable Minister known. As a way of debunking the several rumors and publications going about, castigating the genuine personality of the Honourable Minister.

The Students pointed out that, His Excellency, Godswill Akpabio has done perfectly well since he was appointed to man the office. And as such, deserves the total support and encouragement of all Niger Deltans.

It reads:

As the foremost Student Union body in the Niger Delta region, we have keenly observed over
time with rapt attention the activities of the Former Governor of Akwa Ibom state and
Substantive Minister of Niger Delta Affairs; who has been saddled with extra and befitting
responsibility of Supervising the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) by his
Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR; the President Federal republic of Nigeria.

Amidst the Cheap blackmail and sponsored attacks on the Minister of Niger Delta affairs, we
are once again reminded that silence is not always golden, hence we make the following
position known to the public for history and posterity sake;

  1. That the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs is a bonafide son, a fine gentle man of the Niger Delta, and an uncommon servant Leader of the Niger Delta people. Hence deserves the support of all
well-meaning Niger Deltan to ensure our collective progress and sustainable development.

2.That the Minister since resumption in office has ensured an open door Policy and have
welcomed all Niger Deltans irrespective of ethnicity or political inclination in so far as the
progress of the region is taking the center stage; As we have been beneficiaries of such open
doors for the collective interest of Niger Delta students most recently the palliatives that was
given to over three thousand (3,000) Niger Delta Students/Youth by the NDDC through the SA
to the MD on Youth Development, Amb. Alfred Etuk.

Also the payment of take-off grant by the
NDDC of its scholars on post-graduate studies in foreign universities while making ready plans
for the full payment of their tuition fees soon as the forex requirements around them are
sorted are merits of this open door policy.

  1. That the Minister’s effort in ensuring the smooth take off of the Forensic Audit of the NDDC
in line with the President’s directive is a welcome Development. As this has gone a long way to
solidify the confidence of Niger Deltans on the Minister’s position against Corruption.
  2. That the interim management Committee has not failed on the mandate to run the
commission amidst the forensic Audit, as government cannot operate in vacuum.
  3. That the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs is the most stable and efficient in the next level
Administration of President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR to the credit of the Minister of Niger Delta
    Affairs.
  4. That we are also not oblivious to the fact that corrupt individuals are doing what they must to stall the process of the forensic audit by heating the polity on frivolous accusations.

We therefore, call on his Excellency the Minister of Niger Delta affairs not to be perturbed or
distracted as the administrative head of the ministry that supervises the activities of the NDDC,
his resolute and uncompromising standard is crucial to the success of the NDDC Forensic Audit.

It is an unarguable fact that Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio has consistently impacted positively on
the people of the Niger Delta with every given opportunity.

He has in very many instances
promoted programmes on the Human Capital Development of the youth and students of the
region.

As the Governor of Akwa Ibom state between 2007 and 2015, he championed the new Akwa
Ibom state through his “Uncommon Development Programme”.

We strongly believe, given the antecedent of Chief G. O. Akpabio, his Excellency is capable of
replicating the same uncommon stride in the Niger Delta region through the Ministry of the Niger
Delta Affairs.

Consequent upon the above assertions, the Niger Delta Student Union Government (NIDSUG)
hereby unequivocally passes a Vote of Confidence on His Excellency, Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio
the Honourable Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs.

Going forward, we call on the Presidency to increase the funding of the Ministry of Niger Delta
Affairs and also pay an undivided attention to the region so as to fast track sustainable
development in the region and also maintain peace and stability in the Niger Delta region.

Conclusively as Niger Delta Students, we want to sound a clear warning to all detractors and
conspiracy theorist not to test the resolve of Niger Delta Students as we will not hesitate to
engage and confront anyone seeking to heat up the polity unnecessarily in order to undo the
region.
